Oamaru Steam and Rail operates a small vintage railway in the heart of Historic Oamaru. We are currently operating a vintage Diesel locomotive, ex-NZR Tr35. Our train travels from Harbourside Station, a Railway Station in Itchen Street that was built in one day in 1999. After leaving the Station, you travel behind the Historic Precinct, past some of Oamaru's oldest buildings. After the Historic Precinct we travel through the old Oamaru railway yard, and past the site of Oamaru's first Railway Station. The train then runs along the bottom of clay cliffs, beside Oamaru's Victorian Harbour. At the end of the line, our terminus is the Red Sheds. These sheds built in the 1800's, are now home to various crafts people. Up the road is Portside restaurant with magnificent views out over the Pacific Ocean. Over the road from Portside, is the world famous Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. The return trip is approx. half an hour with about 15 minutes to look around at the Red Sheds. If we're lucky, we may have a little blue penguin in our shed for passengers to see. If 15 minutes isn't long enough for you, you can catch the next train back to Harbourside. Check the Timetable and Fares Page for times.
